Mega Sky at MegaBox: Hong Kong’s New Rooftop Garden for a Dog-Friendly Day Out

Hong Kong has a new place to take in the skyline with your pup. Mega Sky, the new rooftop garden on L18 of MegaBox in Kowloon Bay, brings together a broad lawn, planted gardens and a 270-degree view across East Kowloon and Victoria Harbour.

The official promotional image even shows dogs walking on leads around the lawn. That makes Mega Sky especially interesting for dog owners—but it does not necessarily make the rooftop an off-leash dog park. There is one policy detail to check before setting out, which we explain below.

What is Mega Sky?

MegaBox describes Mega Sky as a 30,000-square-foot rooftop garden with floor-to-ceiling transparent glass and unobstructed views over the harbour and East Kowloon skyline. The space combines open lawn with trees, flowers, curving paths and seating, so it feels more like a sky garden than a small mall terrace.

For dogs who are comfortable around families, city noise and other pets, the open-air setting could make a welcome change from staying inside a carrier while visiting the mall. Keep your dog close to you, stay clear of planted areas, and remember that the glass edge and busy evening shows may not suit every dog.

Is Mega Sky officially dog-friendly?

The signs point toward yes, with conditions, but MegaBox’s published information is not completely aligned yet:

• MegaBox’s official Mega Sky promotional image depicts several dogs walking on leads around the rooftop.
• An independent family guide from Little Steps Asia describes Mega Sky as pet-friendly.
• However, MegaBox’s current mall-wide pet guidelines still say pets must remain inside a covered stroller or carry bag in the mall’s indoor and outdoor areas, with only the enclosed L4 Pets Playground named as an exception.

Until MegaBox adds Mega Sky to its written pet policy, the safest plan is to keep your dog in a covered stroller or carrier while moving through the mall and confirm the rooftop arrangement with staff before allowing your dog out. MegaBox lists 2989 3000 for pet-policy enquiries.

If staff confirms dogs may walk at Mega Sky, treat it as an on-lead shared garden, not a fenced off-leash area. Follow onsite signs and staff instructions, bring waste bags and water, and give other visitors plenty of room.

The best time to visit with a dog

Late afternoon is likely to be the sweet spot. You can arrive after the strongest sun has passed, let your dog settle before the evening crowds, watch the sky change colour, and stay for the light show if your dog is comfortable with projections and music.

On hot days, touch the walking surface with the back of your hand before letting paws down. The lawn may look inviting, but there are exposed paths and limited shade in parts of the rooftop. Bring a portable bowl and plan short breaks.

Dogs who are sensitive to crowds, darkness, moving projections or amplified sound will probably enjoy a quieter daytime visit more than the nightly show.

Free light shows every evening

From 7:30pm to 9:00pm nightly, Mega Sky hosts two free projection experiences. The Light-and-Shadow Aquarium sends whales, sea turtles, manta rays and jellyfish across the rooftop, while the Floral Illusion Show combines flower imagery with colourful light.

Show times can change because of weather or onsite conditions. If you are visiting with a dog, stand back at first and watch their body language. A beautiful visual display for us can feel intense to an animal at ground level.

• Light shows: 7:30pm–9:00pm nightly, subject to weather and onsite conditions

• Public transport: Around a 10-minute walk from Kowloon Bay MTR Station, or use the free MegaBox shuttle bus

Remember that MegaBox’s shuttle has its own pet rules: pets must be enclosed in a covered stroller or carry bag, and dogs weighing 20kg or more are not permitted onboard.

Our verdict: promising, but confirm the dog rule first

Mega Sky looks like a genuinely useful addition to Kowloon Bay: it is spacious, free, open into the evening and visually designed with leashed dogs in the scene. The rooftop view also gives dog owners something Hong Kong does not offer often—a green, open-air pause built into a major shopping centre.

The only catch is the gap between the new promotional imagery and the older written pet guideline. Call ahead, follow the rules given on the day, and do not assume the lawn is off-leash. With that small piece of planning, Mega Sky could be a lovely sunset stop for you and your dog.
